Peng-Sang Cau, Director, Siemens for Startups
Interviewed by Gary Forni, Managing Director, Central Texas Angel Network
Building something physical, or backing a founder who is? Connect directly with Peng and the Siemens for Startups team.
Peng-Sang Cau has lived the hard tech journey from the basement up. She founded an engineering company in 1995, led it as CEO for 22 years, and took a new assembly technology from zero to more than $30 million in sales in under six years before selling it to her largest competitor. Along the way, she won her first customer with a virtual machine because she couldn’t yet afford the $300,000 prototype. That customer went on to buy 14 systems.
Today, as Director of Siemens for Startups, Peng works with roughly 535 startups building physical products. In this ACA conversation, Gary Forni, Managing Director of the Central Texas Angel Network, asks her what angels and their founders keep getting wrong about hard tech companies, and what it takes to get a promising technology from first sketch to full production.
In this conversation
- Why the SaaS playbook falls short in hard tech. Peng explains the “three-headed dragon” every physical-product founder has to slay: long development cycles, scarce patient capital, and early adopters who are afraid to be customer number one.
- Selling a product before it physically exists. How a digital twin turned a theoretical pitch into a boardroom conversation, a first order, and 13 more.
- What to ask in the diligence room. The plain-English question every angel should ask, and the hockey-stick projection Peng reads as a red flag.
- Why execution, not technology, sinks companies. Production, supply chain, sales, and service, and why the founders who succeed build a team around them.
