A Data-Driven Playbook
Introduction
Angel investing is a powerful driver of innovation—but it is also one of the most challenging asset classes to navigate. Returns are highly uneven, outcomes are uncertain, and success depends on capturing a small number of exceptional opportunities. While many investors understand the risks, fewer have access to clear, data-driven guidance on how to improve outcomes over time.
Improving Angel Returns: A Data-Driven Playbook was developed to address this gap. Drawing on years of aggregated data and insights from ACA member groups—including Tech Coast Angels, Central Texas Angel Network, and others—this report provides a comprehensive view of how angel returns actually behave and the factors that most influence performance.
The findings reinforce a core reality: most investments do not return capital, while a small number of outliers drive the majority of returns. Against this backdrop, the paper focuses on what investors can control—offering a practical framework for improving decision-making, managing risk, and increasing exposure to high-potential opportunities.
To develop this playbook, the Angel Capital Association brought together experienced investors and data leaders to synthesize insights across multiple datasets, investment cycles, and market conditions. The result is a structured, evidence-based approach that translates complex return dynamics into actionable strategies for investors at all levels.
The report is organized into three parts: understanding how angel returns behave, identifying the key levers that influence outcomes, and applying a practical decision system to guide investment activity. It emphasizes disciplined portfolio construction, rigorous due diligence, thoughtful capital allocation, and active engagement as core drivers of long-term success.
As market conditions, valuation environments, and exit dynamics continue to evolve, ACA will continue to refine and update its data insights and frameworks. Investors are encouraged to revisit ACA resources regularly to stay aligned with the latest research, tools, and best practices shaping early-stage investing.
